Biden administration OKs major Nevada power project

The Biden administration announced Monday that it would approve large-scale electric transmission and solar projects in Nevada.

The Green Link West Transmission Project will create a new transmission line system from North Las Vegas to Reno that, when completed, will be able to transmit enough electricity to power 4.8 million homes.

While transmission lines can technically support renewable or fossil energy, more power is especially important for feeding new, climate-friendly electricity onto the grid.

Additionally, the administration approved the Libra Solar Project, which will be built on public land and have the capacity to generate enough electricity for 212,000 homes, and will include battery storage for the solar power.

“Under the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris, we are making critical investments to strengthen our electric grid and bring more clean energy to homes and businesses. This will create good-paying union jobs, increase resilience, strengthen energy security, and lower energy bills for Americans,” White House national climate adviser Ali Zaidi said in a statement.

The endorsement comes as Nevada's presidential race remains tight, with Harris leading by half a percentage point in the battleground state, according to an average of polls from Decision Desk HQ and The Hill.

The Biden administration has sought to broadly promote the construction of renewable energy, including on government land. Since taking office, the administration has approved 41 renewable energy projects on public lands that could power more than 12.5 million homes.
