Biden and Harris go to the funeral of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman

Funeral for Minnesota Representative and Husband

Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris were present at the funeral of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, which took place on Saturday. More than a thousand people came together to honor the lives of the Hortmans.

On June 14th, Governor Tim Waltz (D-Minn.) had announced that both Hutchman and Mark were killed in a shooting that police described as potentially politically motivated.

Additionally, State Senator John Hoffman (D-Minn.) and his wife, Yvette, suffered injuries from being shot multiple times during the same incident.

Among the attendees were Gov. Waltz and his wife Gwen, former governor Mark Dayton (D-Minn.), Lt. Colonel Peggy Flanagan (D-Minn.), and Attorney General Keith Ellison (D-Minn.). Gov. Waltz paid tribute on Friday, recognizing Hortman’s legacy as a significant figure in Minnesota politics, notably as the first woman to serve the nation from the Minnesota Capitol.

“Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most consequential speaker in Minnesota history. I remember her as my best friend, leader, and the most talented lawmaker I have ever known,” remarked Waltz. He reflected on their years of collaboration, noting that she was instrumental in shaping policies meant to enhance the lives of Minnesotans.

During the service, Waltz characterized Hortman as both a close friend and a devoted public servant. He encouraged attendees to reflect on how they engage in politics and community life, emphasizing the importance of humanity in their endeavors.

“It’s probably this moment when each of us can look into how we work together and fight for what we care about,” Waltz said, urging everyone to emulate the passion and enthusiasm demonstrated by both Mark and Melissa.

Further investigations revealed that police officers found a storage unit rented by the shooting suspect, Vance Bolter, on June 10th. He reportedly accessed the unit just a day before the tragic event. Items discovered included an empty rifle case, gun cleaning supplies, and a bicycle.

Bolter, aged 57, is currently in custody and has yet to face formal charges, which could include the federal death penalty.
