Biden approves disaster declaration for December flooding in Vermont

President Joe Biden has approved a federal disaster declaration sought by Gov. Phil Scott to help communities in seven Vermont counties that experienced heavy rains and flooding in December.

States and eligible local governments, as well as some private nonprofit organizations, will receive federal funds on a cost-share basis for emergency work to repair or replace facilities damaged by the Dec. 18 and 19 storms and flooding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that it is available. Monday’s news release. The affected counties are Essex, Lamoille, Orange, Orleans, Rutland, Windham and Windsor.

The storm that hit the northeastern United States flooded roads and toppled trees, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people, forced canceled flights and school closures and left at least five people dead.

Scott said last month that federal assessors found that in Vermont, public entities incurred more than $1.9 million in costs to repair public infrastructure. Additionally, five counties had storm-related costs that exceeded the minimum amount per person to qualify for aid, he said.
