Revocation of Taif Sami Mohammed’s Visa and Status Changes

Four years ago, Taif Sami Mohammed was hailed in the United States as a symbol of courage. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recognized her as Iraq’s “Iron Woman,” commending her efforts to combat corruption and bribery, despite facing threats. However, her situation has significantly changed.

Currently, Mohammed is believed to be outside Iraq, banned from entering the United States and placed on the U.S. terrorist watchlist. A State Department official disclosed that her visa was revoked recently, signifying a stark turnaround for someone who received a prominent award for women from the Biden administration in 2022.

Dylan Johnson, the Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, commented on the situation, contrasting the Biden administration’s actions with those of the Trump administration. He stated that while the current State Department celebrated individuals who allegedly threaten the nation, the Trump administration focused on deporting such individuals.

Moving on, the State Department hasn’t provided specifics regarding when she was added to the watchlist or the intelligence justifying that decision. Yet, it’s well-known that her decline in status has been visible for over a year.

Republican lawmakers had previously accused her of enabling terrorist financing through Iraq’s financial systems. Two representatives specifically labeled her a major facilitator of such funding and urged actions against her. These allegations present a stark contrast to how she was viewed when she received the International Women of Courage Award.

At that time, Mohammed held the positions of deputy finance minister and director general for Iraq’s budget department, having been noted for her role in tackling corruption. Blinken had even stated that she successfully curtailed bribes and exposed deceitful practices aimed at financially benefiting corrupt officials.

Later, Mohammed transitioned into the role of Iraq’s finance minister, where she managed government spending and financial relations, including those with the Kurdish region. However, her troubles are now extending beyond the U.S. An Iraqi court has summoned her, putting her on a wanted list as part of an expanding corruption investigation involving past senior officials.

Despite being outside Iraq and not detained, the investigations don’t automatically imply wrongdoing on her part. The probe is linked to broader issues of public money management and has implicated other former officials as well.

Moreover, the implications of her being placed on the terrorist watchlist are serious, but the State Department hasn’t clarified if this is tied to the allegations of terrorist financing or the ongoing corruption investigations in Iraq.
