President Biden has a narrow lead over former President Trump in a new poll asking whether democracy and the rule of law would be protected if either of the leading candidates were elected to the White House.
New CBS News/YouGov poll Thirty-four percent of voters believe that democracy and the rule of law in the United States will be “secure” if Mr. Biden wins the November election, and 33% think the same about Mr. Trump. . Both candidates are likely to be candidates from their respective parties for a possible 2020 rematch next fall.
A significant share of voters also expressed pessimism about the security of democracy in the hands of either candidate. In the poll, 20% of voters said democracy and the rule of law were not safe in any case.
A further 13% said it was safe no matter who won.
When voters were asked who they would vote for in the likely general election, Mr. Trump led Mr. Biden by 4 points. According to the poll, 52% of respondents said they supported Trump and 48% said they supported Biden.
Trump also did better when voters were asked about each candidate’s physical and mental health. Forty-five percent said only Trump is physically fit to serve as president, 17% said only Biden does, and 29% said neither one does.
Similarly, 43% said only Trump has the mental and cognitive health to be president, and 26% said only Biden does. A quarter of respondents said neither candidate did so, according to the poll.
The poll was conducted among 2,159 adult U.S. residents from February 28 to March 1, and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
