Biden calls Trump an 'existential' danger to Black Americans in address to lawyers group

Biden Criticizes Trump at National Bar Association Gala

Former President Joe Biden openly criticized President Donald Trump during the National Bar Association’s 100th Annual Gala held in Chicago on Thursday night. He characterized Trump’s administration as being involved in an “existential” conflict with minority groups.

Biden pointed out that “since the turbulent days of the 1960s, this battle has shaped who we are as a nation.” He added that it’s crucial to confront the stark realities of Trump’s administration, which, in his view, has undermined the benefits established during his presidency. “If we lose fairness and equality, we lose justice itself. That’s not an exaggeration,” he stated. “Get ready; this is just the beginning.”

He reflected on pivotal moments that redefine lives and institutions, suggesting that the very fabric of democracy is being tested. “We can see these moments in American history — the erosion of foundational freedoms and the rollback of established norms,” he noted.

Biden positioned himself as a staunch supporter of the civil rights movement, claiming his administration appointed more Black women to the U.S. Court of Appeals than all his predecessors combined. He emphasized the importance of resisting the current administration, particularly in the context of judicial matters.

“Judges, laws, constitutions—the pressure under this presidency is becoming really evident,” he remarked. Biden also redirected his criticism towards Congress and the Supreme Court for their perceived inaction, saying, “They often just sit by, aided by Congress and the highest courts. The decisions they make are, quite frankly, alarming.”

Biden called the present “dark days” but insisted that the gathered audience shares a commitment to shape the future. He suggested that their work in law was crucial now more than ever.

Although Biden’s speech largely avoided major gaffes, he did trip over his words occasionally. He humorously remarked, “When I was elected, I had the bizarre distinction of being the youngest senator and now the oldest president.”

The event featured several notable speakers, including prominent lawyers and lawmakers, with Wiley Adams, president of the National Bar Association, praising Biden’s unwavering dedication to justice and the rule of law.

This speech follows recent developments involving Biden’s son, Hunter, who is facing legal scrutiny due to alleged drug use and violations revolving around gun laws. Hunter was recently interviewed where he condemned Democratic figures and discussed his past addiction issues.

Amid the scrutiny, an incident involving a firearm registered to Hunter, discovered in a trash can in Delaware, has stirred public attention. The weapon reportedly came into the possession of a passerby who was later called to testify.

Hunter’s legal issues have led to complications, including a suspension of his law license in Washington, D.C. He previously filed an affidavit agreeing to this denial to sidestep a court hearing.

In a separate but related note, Biden’s longtime aide, Michael Donilon, testified about the president’s capacity to lead effectively in a potential 2024 re-election campaign despite ongoing allegations regarding his health and decision-making.

The National Bar Association, established in Iowa when the American Bar Association barred Black lawyers, now boasts around 66,000 members advocating for civil rights and equitable access to the legal system.

In closing, the association noted that Biden’s presence underscores his ongoing commitment to upholding the rule of law and supporting marginalized communities.
