President Joe Biden is preparing to support Supreme Court reform in hopes of energizing the left-wing base of his Democratic Party as his reelection campaign continues to falter.

But they would stop short of calling for an expansion of the Supreme Court.
It may be a matter of politics rather than principle.
Democrats previously hoped to use their temporary majorities in both houses of Congress in 2021 and 2022 to expand the Supreme Court, “filling” it with enough liberal justices to supplant the six Republican-appointed justices on the court.
Given the number of Democratic seats at stake in November, the likelihood of losing the Senate makes the idea of expanding the Supreme Court less appealing, as Republicans could block left-wing nominations.

President Biden is finalizing plans to approve major reforms to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposing legislation to impose term limits on justices and enforceable ethics rules, according to two people briefed on the plans.
The people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private, said Trump is also considering whether to seek a constitutional amendment to eliminate broad immunity for the president and other constitutional offices.
The announcement would mark a major shift for Biden, a former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who has long resisted calls for reform of the Supreme Court.
With the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, the Supreme Court tilted 5-4 toward a Republican-appointed majority, and left-leaning Democrats began discussing expanding the court.
The idea gained momentum during the 2020 campaign, especially after the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the appointment of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Biden did not state his position, promising only to appoint a commission to look into the issue.
The commission said the benefits of expanding the Supreme Court were “uncertain” when it released its report in December 2021. The commission considered proposals such as term limits and ethics rules for Supreme Court justices.

Rep. Michael R. Lurie (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Breitbart News in an interview at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that Democrats are simply trying to change the rules because recent Supreme Court decisions didn’t go their way.
He said Biden’s proposal reinforces the idea that the 2024 presidential election will be “the most important election of our lifetimes” because it is Biden’s proposal that has put the Supreme Court at risk.
