Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) this week removed references to “diversity, equity and inclusion” from his campaign website as part of his bid to succeed President Biden.

The Phillips campaign used the term as a heading for its political platform. It has now been replaced with the phrase “equity and restorative justice,” but the description under the header remains the same, according to Politico.

The changes were made Monday or Tuesday and come shortly after Phillips' political PAC received a $1 million donation from businessman Bill Ackman. He has publicly opposed DEI efforts in business and academic circles.

DEI programs have come under increased scrutiny in recent years due to race-based discrimination. A U.S. Supreme Court decision last year struck down affirmative action, a key pillar of DEI programs.

Ackman publicly called for DEI to be built into Philips' platform in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Ackman claimed that Phillips “didn't understand what DEI was when it became part of the website. I made the same mistake.”

Meanwhile, Phillips' camp argued that the term “DEI” is no longer useful.

“DEI now has so many different meanings to different people and is no longer descriptive.Instead of an academic discussion of the phrase, our campaign addresses racial disparities and We prefer to focus on the urgent need to make amends, and the essence of that policy remains exactly the same today,” Phillips campaign spokeswoman Katie Dolan told Politico. Ta. “We believe the current accordion drop-down button 'Equity and Restorative Justice' clearly articulates the campaign's goal of an America where all people live with economic security and social dignity. .”
