Top strategist for Maine Senate candidates laughs at vetting process
Dan Morav, a leading strategist for Maine Senator Graham Platner, chuckled when asked about the vetting process but acknowledged that his team had overlooked some significant issues. Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley referred to the strategists as “dishonest” and raised concerns over the implications for public trust. He stressed the potential repercussions of poor vetting on the Democratic Party’s credibility and election integrity.
According to individuals familiar with the campaign’s early days, Platner’s Senate effort disregarded warnings from his investigative team about the necessity for more comprehensive background checks.
It turns out that a detailed vetting could have spared Democrats quite a few complications in one of the crucial Senate races for 2026. However, many on the left have criticized Dan Morav and Morris Katz, the political aides behind Platner’s rapid ascent, for not thoroughly assessing him before they recommended him.
Sources confirmed that Morav and Katz directed the investigation, which spanned just three days.
The vetting firm repeatedly advised the campaign that further scrutiny was essential after the initial review uncovered details that could create significant issues. Unfortunately, this advice was ignored by Platner’s staff.
Furthermore, during the vetting process, the campaign team reportedly prevented anyone investigating Platner from conducting interviews. In addition to earlier reported scrutiny to examine Platner’s posts on Reddit, other information surfaced that questioned his blue-collar persona.
Interestingly, the activists responsible for Plattner’s rise acknowledged that they failed to mention his Nazi-associated tattoos during the vetting process.
Morav commented to The Wall Street Journal regarding the vetting, suggesting that although they received some material, not all relevant posts were provided, especially pertaining to Platner’s now-deleted Reddit content.
Various scandals—including drunk driving, a privileged background, and tattoos linked to Nazi imagery—emerged from public records and were later highlighted by news outlets.
Platner halted his Senate campaign after a former girlfriend accused him of rape. This decision followed a cascade of controversies, notably related to troubling posts from his former Reddit account and allegations of abusive behavior.
On Friday, he completed the necessary documentation to officially withdraw from the election.
Amid the fallout, millions in advertising funds vanished from the Platner campaign mere days before the rape allegation surfaced, which derailed his Senate ambitions.
A source familiar with candidate vetting remarked, “It’s odd…nobody requested three days of research.” They clarified that while initial findings often require urgency, such brief checks usually lead to extensive documentation later.
In a conversation with The Wall Street Journal, Platner’s team justified opting for a brief review process, explaining they lacked the budget for a thorough investigation. They spent around $6,000 on the vetting, a fraction of the tens of thousands generally needed for comprehensive background checks on candidates.
Yet, Platner quickly emerged as one of the top Democratic fundraisers, gathering over $16 million in donations between July 2025 and June 2026, raising eyebrows about why the campaign didn’t pursue a deeper review given their financial success.
Maine’s Democratic Party is preparing for a nominating convention to select a replacement for Platner ahead of the July 13 deadline for removing him from the ballot. Party delegates will decide on nominees for the November general election.
Although Platner’s campaign and advisors were approached for comments, they did not respond to inquiries.
