Biden comments on Kamala Harris’ popular response during ‘The View’

Former President Joe Biden has refuted claims that he told Vice President Kamala Harris there was no “sunlight” between them during the campaign. In an interview on ABC’s October 2024 show, he characterized this moment as a chance for her to create a distinct identity from his.

Co-host Sunny Hostin brought up questions she had posed to Harris prior to the election, asking if then-President Biden was doing things differently. Harris replied, “It’s not something that comes to mind.” Hostin pointed out that this response was “weaponized against her” and pressed Biden about a report stating he told Harris that there was no “sunlight” between them.

Biden responded, asserting, “Well, first of all, I didn’t advise her to say that. I was the vice president, and I understood the role. I’m number one. I believe she was integral to all our successes.”

The upcoming book by reporters Amie Perns and Jonathan Allen suggests that Biden often publicly encouraged Harris to do what it took to win while also advising her privately. On the day of the debate, he sought a pep talk from her, hoping she would bolster his legacy since he could no longer defend it himself. They noted that he felt it would hurt her if he distanced himself from her during such a visible moment.

During an interview on Thursday, Hostin questioned Biden about critics who argued that Harris had only about 90 days for her campaign, suggesting he should have exited the race earlier to give her more time. Biden answered, “No. 1, for only six months, she doesn’t believe she should see every decision I made, and I don’t want to misinterpret that.”

Biden ended his campaign on July 21, 2024, which led Harris to run an extended campaign through August, September, and October. He has openly condemned the sexism and racism that contributed to Harris’ defeat and expressed no surprise at Trump’s victory. Hostin also acknowledged these issues in the aftermath of the election.

Biden remarked, “As a society, it’s troubling to think that people deny the existence of racism and misogyny. These issues are real, impacting our neighbors and friends, and it’s essential to recognize that.”
