Biden Commutes Sentence of U of Miami Booster and Ponzi Scheme Convict Nevin Shapiro

Another person whose sentence was commuted by President Joe Biden was Nevin Shapiro, a notorious University of Miami booster and convicted pyramid scheme fraudster.

Mr. Shapiro was convicted in 2010 of a Ponzi scheme that extorted money from thousands of people who invested in a fake company, Capital Investments.

His crimes included creating false documents purporting to show how CI was making tens of millions of dollars a year by owning and operating a non-existent wholesale grocery business. He was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2010.

Meanwhile, Shapiro was spending $400,000 on floor seats to watch the Miami Heat, $26,000 a month on rent for his Miami Beach home, a $1.5 million yacht, luxury cars, and other luxuries.

Reportedly, he often hung out with NBA players such as Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, and Kevin Garnett.

Mr. Shapiro also worked closely with the University of Miami, pledging $150,000 to help the university build a student lounge in his name.

The convicted felon was also implicated in granting unforgivable benefits to players for nearly a decade in order to boost college sports programs, primarily Hurricanes football.

Although no legal charges were ever filed, the school ultimately faced a series of penalties for violating NCAA rules. The school lost scholarships, suffered recruiting setbacks and suffered various suspensions.

Shapiro was already released in 2020 thanks to coronavirus precautions and was serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. But now, according to TMZit's all behind him now that Biden has canceled his remaining sentence.

Shapiro has yet to make any effort to repay the $82,657,362.29 he owes his victims.
