Biden considers bringing Palestinians to US as ‘refugees’: Report

The Biden administration is considering bringing some Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to the United States as “refugees,” according to a report on Tuesday. CBS News.

The media has obtained documents revealing that senior officials from several federal agencies are discussing where to “resettle” Palestinians seeking to flee.

Palestinian nationals with “U.S. ties” who have already left Gaza and moved to Egypt could be brought to the U.S. under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, according to an interagency document obtained by CBS News. . People still in Gaza with family members who are American citizens or permanent residents may also be processed through the program, the document states. CBS News reported that the proposed plan would require coordination with Egypt, which refuses to accept Palestinians.

The program, created in 1980, has been used to relocate more than 400,000 foreigners, but has never been used to resettle large numbers of Palestinians.

According to the news agency, in order to be recognized as a refugee, a person must pass a qualification, medical and safety examination. The program would provide permanent residency, housing assistance, and a path to citizenship.

CBS News claimed that “the targeted population is expected to be relatively small.”

Recent Opinion poll on research and development in the Arab world found Seventy-five percent of Palestinians supported the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack that massacred Israeli citizens. Approximately 76% said they had a favorable view of Hamas.

“Respondents were generally negative in their assessment of the role of the United States and Israel,” the poll states.

A White House spokesperson told the media that the Biden administration is “supporting the escape of more than 1,800 American citizens and their families from Gaza, many of whom have come to the United States. At President Biden’s direction, we are also assisting.” We have done so and will continue to support them.” Particularly vulnerable people, such as children with serious health problems or undergoing treatment for cancer, are fleeing danger and receiving treatment at nearby hospitals in their communities. ”

The spokesperson said the administration “categorically rejects any action that would lead to the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank or the redrawing of Gaza’s borders. The best path forward is through a sustainable cease-fire through a hostage deal.” “The aim is to achieve this,” he added. It would stabilize the situation and pave the way for a two-state solution. ”

U.S. Representative Jamal Bowman (Democratic) from New York said:fully supported[s]“The proposed plan.

“We are a nation of immigrants, and we are a nation of asylum seekers,” Bowman said in a recent interview. “For people fleeing persecution, oppression, and violence, the United States has always been an open home for such people. So whether they come from Palestine, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, or Haiti, They’re coming here to contribute to our economy, and that’s 99.9% of them. We’ve always been a place that opens its doors to immigrants coming here, so yeah, we do that across the board. I support you.”

“I also fully support amnesty for immigrants who have been here for quite some time,” he added.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-South Carolina, called the Biden administration’s potential plan “bullshit.”

“President Biden is consistently undermining our national security with reckless decisions like this. I have no idea,” Scott wrote. X.
