Four police officers were killed and several more were injured in North Carolina on Monday while attempting to execute a warrant related to illegal gun possession.
On Monday at approximately 1:30 p.m., members us marshals task force They arrived at a home on the east side of Charlotte, North Carolina, to serve a warrant. The subject of the warrant, 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr., was wanted in connection with two counts of felony possession of a firearm by a felon and being a fugitive from neighboring Lincoln County.
As the officers approached the house, gunfire suddenly rang out, hitting several members of the task force. Officers then returned fire as gunfire continued from inside the residence.
Hughes eventually emerged from the residence and still appeared to fire at police. Hughes was then shot by one of the officers at the scene and died in the front yard. As Hughes lay dying, people inside his home reportedly continued to fire at officers.
The three law enforcement personnel struck by gunfire died almost immediately. Among them were Sam Poloche and William “Alden” Elliott of the state Department of Adult Corrections, and an unnamed deputy U.S. Marshal.a 4th member A member of the task force, Officer Joshua Eyer of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, was initially injured and taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
“Officer Eyer served the CMPD North Tryon Division faithfully for six years and was a member of the 178th Recruit Class,” CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said in a statement. “We are forever grateful for Officer Iyer’s courage and ultimate sacrifice. His life and contributions will never be forgotten. Please keep Officer Iyer’s loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time. please.”
In addition to the officer who died, four other officers were injured. Their current status is unknown.
After the gunfight, a standoff began between the CMPD SWAT team and the people inside the home, which lasted for hours.There are two women and one of them is just 17 years old, and was eventually kicked out of the house. They have been taken in for questioning and are considered persons of interest. By 5pm, police officers declared the area safe for normal road traffic.
Politicians at the local, state, and federal levels immediately issued statements expressing condolences and expressing support and admiration for law enforcement. “A brave law enforcement officer sworn to protect and serve us all was attacked in Charlotte. Susan and I pray for everyone’s safety,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, RN.C. Stated.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) similarly offered prayers for the victims and said he had “provided state resources to help.”
President Biden echoed this sentiment, calling the fallen officers “heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.” But, as usual, he later used the deadly incident to call for stricter gun control. “Come on,” he said.
“Congressional leaders need to do more to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe gun storage, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law,” he added. “There is,” he said.
