CNN political director David Chalian said Thursday during the station’s State of the Union coverage that President Joe Biden gave a “reelection speech.”
“There’s no question in your point that this was a political speech. It was a reelection speech wrapped in a State of the Union. But it’s also a speech that truly reflects our times,” Charian said. It turns out that nothing in American politics is like it used to be. This speech, the attitude of members of Congress, the president’s embrace of raw politics, his repeated denunciations of his predecessor, etc. I think that’s the cause.”
He continued: That’s unprecedented. It is also unprecedented for him to be running against someone who once served as president and is trying to make a comeback after losing. Also, the fact that he’s facing all these trials, and what happened in this very chamber on January 6th, all of this is unprecedented — and I just think that the public Applying our sense of what the State of the Union address was, that’s not our political realm anymore. ”
Charian added: “I know Republicans are going to criticize him here for being political, but it seems to me that he actually gave a speech that is appropriate for this moment.”
