Samantha Power, director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Biden-Harris administration, said on Friday that “Americans will not be able to help keep the lights and heat on in Ukraine going,” with some 700,000 U.S. homes and businesses affected. He posted a tone-deaf video explaining, “Are we supporting them?'' Power outage due to Hurricane Helen.
“I'm currently at a substation in western Ukraine, which provides enough electricity for about 500,000 residents of this region,” Power says in the video. “I am now standing in front of an autotransformer that provided electricity but was destroyed by Putin's forces in 2022.”
She adds:
Recognizing Putin's intent to attack critical infrastructure as we head into winter, USAID doubles down on investments to replace damaged or destroyed autotransformers and protect remaining energy infrastructure I'm letting you do it. Thanks to the support of the American people, USAID is working with Ukrainians to keep the lights on and the heat on this winter.
According to NBC Newsnearly 700,000 homes and businesses in the United States were without power.
The network said more than 260,000 customers were without power in South Carolina and 215,000 in North Carolina.
More than 190,000 customers are without power in Georgia and more than 10,000 in Virginia.
Power's post did not go down well with Americans affected by the worst hurricane since Hurricane Katrina.
Anna Khitlova, a photographer and artist from Asheville, North Carolina, one of the hardest hit towns, told Breitbart News that she had been without power for nine days when she saw Power's post.
“I'm watching this video in my house without electricity, and the sun has just set. That means that while thousands of Americans are still sitting in the dark, Ukraine is trying to keep the lights on. ” Hitlova posted on X.
She said communities in the mountains will be without power for much longer than East Asheville, where she lives.
Dozens of others condemned Power's post, including Richard Grenell, who served as acting director of national intelligence under former President Donald Trump.
Grenell said, “Some Americans have not yet received strength from Helen. Some Americans have lost everything. More than 200 Americans have died and thousands have been affected. Ashe, North Carolina. Building infrastructure was destroyed. Complete destruction occurred in some areas of the United States.”
“Meanwhile, Samantha Power makes a video proudly donating tens of millions of US tax dollars to Ukraine. Tone. Deaf,” he posted.
