Biden-Harris EV Rule Could Gut 123,000 Auto Manufacturing Jobs

According to an analysis by the America First Institute, the Biden-Harris plan for electric vehicles could cost the U.S. 123,000 auto manufacturing jobs, and an even more radical proposal pushed by Vice President Kamala Harris would be even more devastating, especially in Rust Belt states.

In the analysis, Published On Monday, the release found that the administration's “current EV restrictions could result in the loss of 123,000 auto manufacturing jobs.”

The administration has introduced rules to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles in 2024. The rules also require that the majority of new cars sold in the U.S. be electric or hybrid by 2032. The Wall Street Journal Editorial Committee attentionThe rule means that “gas-powered vehicles will account for less than 30 percent of auto sales by 2032.”

In the 2019 presidential election, Harris' platform included: Phase out Sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles will be completely phased out by 2035.

“Unemployment could soar to more than 191,000 if Vice President Kamala Harris' extreme plan to ban all gasoline and hybrid cars as early as 2035 goes ahead,” AFPI added in a statement.

The analysis found that Governor Harris' 2019 proposal, if enacted, would result in the loss of tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs in several Midwestern states, including roughly 37,000 jobs in Michigan, 21,000 jobs in Ohio, and 24,000 jobs in Indiana.

Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican candidate challenging Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) for Sen. Debbie Stabenow's (D-Mich.) seat, blasted the electric vehicle mandate and Harris' proposal during a press conference on Monday.

“The impact this policy has on auto workers in this state… I worked in an auto plant, which gave me the money I needed to go to college. … These factory jobs are vital to our economy and our families,” he said before citing AFPI analysis.

“A report came out today that says 200,000 auto manufacturing jobs will be lost if the Biden-Harris-Slotkin policies are implemented,” he added.

“When you start thinking about how this is going to impact our communities here, it's going to ripple through our economy in ways we've never seen in our history, because we're knowingly strangling the autoworkers of Michigan,” Rogers said.
