President Biden will head to Wisconsin on Thursday to announce that his administration will invest nearly $5 billion in new infrastructure projects, including $1 billion in the battleground state alone.
Biden will make the announcement in Superior. In 2020, he won the state of Wisconsin, defeating former President Trump.
The $4.9 billion includes $1 billion to replace the Blatnik Bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota. Biden visited the bridge in March 2022 and said at the time that this is the kind of infrastructure he wants to rebuild in the bipartisan infrastructure law he signed in November 2021.
The visit to key battleground states comes as Biden's re-election campaign signals a shift in focus to the general election. Recent polls have shown mixed signs for Biden in Wisconsin, with a November Marquette Law School poll giving him a 2-point lead over Trump and a December Morning Consult and Bloomberg Poll showing him with a 2-point lead over Trump. News polls show Biden leading Trump in seven battleground states, including Wisconsin.
Overall, this investment will help build 37 projects across the United States, including Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Georgia. The bipartisan infrastructure law has propelled 40,000 infrastructure projects across the country, according to government officials.
The project also includes $600 million to replace the 1-5 Bridge between Oregon and Washington and $427 million to install the Pacific Coast's first offshore wind farm.
Additionally, $327 million will replace the Sagamore Bridge in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and $300 will build a new container terminal at the Port of New Orleans.
The new project “will truly be a cathedral for the next generation of American infrastructure that will shape our region, our nation and our economy for the better,” the Transportation Division said. Pete Buttigieg told reporters Wednesday.
