President Biden took to social media on Friday night to slam former President Trump’s speech when he accepted the Republican presidential nomination on the final night of the Republican National Convention (RNC).
“I’ve been stuck at home with COVID and had the misfortune of watching Donald Trump speak at the Republican National Convention.” Posted by Biden On social media platform X. “What on earth was he saying?”
The president announced earlier this week that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would be isolating at his home in Delaware. Meanwhile, there was no shortage of glamour when President Trump closed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee early last week by selecting Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate.
The former president took to the stage on Thursday with a rock-star-like entrance, formally becoming the Republican presidential nominee for November.
His speech, his first since the gunman attempted to assassinate him a week ago, lasted more than 90 minutes, making it the longest acceptance speech by a major party candidate in the history of the Republican National Convention.
Biden highlighted several moments from Trump’s speech in a rant that continued past midnight.
“Let’s start here: Donald said we’ve done a ‘great job’ on COVID-19,” Biden said. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the same guy who said we should inject bleach even as over a million Americans have died.”
He also pointed to the former president’s comments about protecting Social Security and Medicare, calling them “total lies.”
“Trump has proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare every year he’s been in office,” he said, “and he will do so again.”
Biden’s X-thread attacked his 2024 presidential rival over comments he made on tax cuts, ending inflation, an electric vehicle mandate and immigration. Biden also mocked the former president for praising fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter, whom Trump called a “fantastic man.”
“Donald, Hannibal Lecter is not real,” Biden wrote, “and he’s a cannibal.”
Biden called on Trump to “look at the facts” when it comes to the country’s job growth.
“Honestly, the most egregious lie he told all night was when he said, ‘In conclusion,’ and then he kept saying it,” the incumbent said. “I’ve heard enough. If you agree with me, I want you to help our campaign.”
Trump made a point of mentioning Biden just once in his speech, opening with a different side to the former president but quickly shifting his tone to a standard rally, criticizing Biden and “crazy” former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Biden, whose poor debate performance has sparked concerns about his mental health for another term and calls from within his party for him to step aside, is battling the coronavirus, but his campaign said Trump’s speech has only made Biden “more determined than ever.”
