The White House has announced that Democratic President Jimmy Carter's official state funeral will be held on January 9th at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

The announcement comes after Mr. Carter died on Sunday at age 100, with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden characterizing him as an “extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.” was announced.
“For more than 60 years, we were honored to call Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But what is so extraordinary about Jimmy Carter is that there are many people across the country and around the world who have never met him. Millions of people also considered him a dear friend,” the Bidens said in a statement.
“With compassion and moral clarity, he fought to eradicate disease, build peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always reach out to the lowest among us. He saved, uplifted, and changed lives around the world,” the statement continued.
The state funeral will consist of three “stages”, the first being a public memorial service in Georgia, where Carter spent most of his life.
The second phase will include a ceremony in Washington, D.C., with participation from “elite military bands, military honor guards,” “National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve units,” and more.
Finally, number three will include another special private burial in Mr. Carter's hometown of Plains, Georgia.
President Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy at the funeral, which will also be attended by Presidents Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George and Laura Bush.
It is unclear whether President-elect Donald Trump will attend Carter's funeral, but he issued two statements after Carter's death, each saying, “We all owe him a debt of gratitude.” Trump also posted on Truth Social regarding his death.

President Biden also said the day of Carter's funeral will be a “national day of mourning.” All American flags will be flown at half-staff on all federal buildings, military posts, and naval bases for 30 days.
“I call on Americans to gather in their places of worship on that day to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr.,” Biden said. “We call on people around the world who share our sorrow to join us in this solemn occasion.”
