The Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, which carried out the attack on Israel on October 7, is on both sides of the negotiating table over the Israeli hostages, thanks to the intervention of Qatar and Egypt and the stance of the Biden administration.
politiko rreported On Wednesday, it was announced that several families of Israeli hostages were being advised by a Washington, D.C., consultant paid by Qatar. The consultants include former Clinton administration staffer Jay Futlik, whose company says he makes $40,000 a month from the Qatari embassy in the United States. politiko, clients of a Qatari-funded consulting firm have been advised not to criticize the Qatari government. Thus, while the Qataris have taken on the role of mediators, they have also been tasked with shaping the demands of the hostage families.
At the same time, the Biden administration is publicly committed to helping Israel win the war and dismantle Hamas; using The latest round of hostage negotiations pressured Israel to end the war without a victory and left open the possibility that terrorist groups could reunite and once again threaten Israeli communities. Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have also publicly pressed Israel to accept a Palestinian state as a result of the war, handing Hamas a major propaganda victory.
Although the demand for a Palestinian state has been portrayed as part of a broader Saudi-Israeli peace effort, Saudi Arabia was in fact willing to reach a peace deal without a Palestinian state even before the war. The Biden administration has reportedly blocked such deals.
The Biden administration will also use its influence on Qatar to force it to stop providing shelter to Hamas’s billionaire leaders, and to force Hamas leaders to release all hostages and ensure that the Red Cross (According to the request of the international community). Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already privately expressed dissatisfaction with the United States’ recent renewal of a contract to host military facilities in Qatar, instead of using it as a lever to induce policy changes in Qatar.
Likewise, the Biden administration do not have Pressure on Egypt, a major recipient of U.S. aid, to allow Israel to maintain control of the border between Gaza and Egypt on the Gaza side. Israel must do so to destroy what remains of Hamas and prevent further smuggling. Bringing weapons into Gaza and smuggling leaders and possibly Israeli hostages out of Gaza. The Egyptian regime rejects Israel’s victory, suggesting that Israel is not just an intermediary but also an ally of Hamas.
Israel is thus completely isolated at the negotiating table. However, Hamas receives support from Qatar, which is working to give shape to the demands of the hostage families. from Egypt, which is trying to protect the Hamas leadership and its smuggling routes from defeat. And the Biden administration is pressing for the establishment of a Palestinian state, handicap Israel, which has sought peace since its founding.
I believe Hamas can win because they are on both sides of the table.
