President Biden met with the widow and daughter of late Russian activist Alexei Navalny on Thursday, six days after his death was announced in an Arctic prison.
The meeting between Yulia Navalnaya and Dasha Navalnaya took place in San Francisco and marks the first confirmation of Yulia Navalnaya’s whereabouts since her husband’s death.
Dasha Navalnaya is a student at nearby Stanford University.
The White House said in a statement that Biden “explicitly”[ed] It expressed its sincere condolences for the “tragic loss” of the women, and said: “Mr Navalny’s extraordinary courage and work in the fight against corruption, and his dedication to a free and democratic Russia where the rule of law applies equally to all,” he said. “I expressed my admiration for him.”
The White House is expected to announce new sanctions against Russia following the death of Navalny, 47, and continued prosecution over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
