Biden, Netanyahu speak after ‘Iran’s brazen attack’

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Saturday in response to “Iran’s brazen attacks” targeting Israel.

“Early today, Iran and its proxies in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq launched an unprecedented airstrike against Israeli military facilities,” Biden said Saturday night. statement. “I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.”

The president said in the call that he reaffirmed U.S. support for Israel and condemned Iranian missile and drone attacks.

“I just spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu to reaffirm America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security,” Biden said. “I told him that Israel has demonstrated an incredible ability to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks, sending a clear message to its enemies that they cannot effectively threaten Israel’s security.”

Iran launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on Saturday. These actions follow Iran’s public campaign against Israel in the wake of an Israeli attack near the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, in early April that killed two senior Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) officers. This was to be expected considering the threat he was making on the spot.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that Israel intercepted most of the missiles with the help of allied defense systems. Iranian state media reported that Ramon Air Base in southern Israel was attacked with seven missiles, some of which also hit Nevatim Air Base.

“At my direction, the U.S. military moved aircraft and a ballistic missile defense destroyer to the region last week to support the defense of Israel,” Biden said. “Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our military personnel, we helped Israel shoot down nearly all incoming drones and missiles.”

Biden said he would meet with G7 leaders on Saturday to “coordinate a unified diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack.”

“My team will work with teams across the region,” the president said. “And while we have not seen any attacks on our forces or facilities today, we remain vigilant against any threats and remain in close contact with Israeli leaders. We will not hesitate to take any action necessary to protect our customers.”
