On CBS' Sunday broadcast of “Face the Nation,” the network's legal affairs correspondent Jan Crawford said President Joe Biden's “apparent cognitive decline” is the most talked about issue of 2024. He said it was one of the underreported news stories.
A partial transcription follows:
Major Garrett: One of the things we do at our year-end correspondents roundtable is dig into what was hidden or underreported.
Jean?
JAN CRAWFORD: Hidden and underreported, to me, would be the obvious cognitive decline of Joe Biden that became undeniable in the televised debates.
Garrett: At the presidential debate with Donald Trump.
CRAWFORD: There's no question about it.
And it's now beginning to become clear that his advisers have been managing his limits for four years, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. However, he insisted he could still run for president. We should have asked more forcefully whether he is fit for another four years, which could have led to a Democratic primary.
That could have changed the scope of the entire election. Yet, incredibly, we read in the Washington Post that his advisers say they regret dropping out of the race and think Trump could have won. I read that it is. And I think that's either delusional or they're gaslighting the American people.
ROBERT COSTA: President Biden said he felt ill during the debate in Atlanta on June 27, but reiterated that he is always healthy and will return home strong.
That is his position, and so is the position of many of his inner circle, despite such reports.
