President Joe Biden said Wednesday he was “outraged” by the death of activist Aysenour Ezgi Egi during Palestinian riots in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) last week.
A preliminary investigation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Eigi was killed when Israeli forces opened fire on a group of Palestinian rioters.
“Investigations have determined that she was most likely hit indirectly and unintentionally by IDF gunfire, which was not directed at her, but at the main perpetrators of the riots,” the IDF said. “The incident occurred during a riot at Beita crossing, where dozens of suspected Palestinians burned tires and threw stones at security forces.”
It is unclear what Eigi was doing there.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed on Tuesday that Aegis was “killed at the hands of Israeli security forces.”
Biden Stacked:
“I am outraged and deeply saddened by the death of Aysenur Eyghi. Aysenur was a recent graduate from a university in the United States. She was also an activist whose idealism led her to the West Bank to peacefully protest against settlement expansion. The shooting that led to her death is completely unacceptable.
Israel has accepted responsibility for Aysenour's death, with a preliminary investigation indicating it was the result of a tragic mistake resulting from unnecessary escalation of tensions.
Israeli government spokesman David Mensah told reporters on Wednesday that Eigi's death was a “terrible mistake” and that the IDF “regrets what happened” and sent its “condolences to the family.”
