President Joe Biden spoke Tuesday afternoon pleading for stricter gun control measures for Americans, just hours after his son Hunter was convicted of firearms-related charges.
The speech was given at an event hosted by Everytown for Gun Safety, of which Mike Bloomberg is a member.
Biden Said“In two weeks we will mark the two-year anniversary of the bipartisan Safe Communities Act.”
The Bipartisan Safe Communities Act (BSCA) is a gun control bill that Republican Senator John Cornyn helped Democrats craft and pass in 2022.
The president went on to explain that BSCA has paved the way for his administration to spend millions of dollars on strengthening gun laws and promoting firearms control, and he also noted the creation of the “first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.”
He said the office was created to send a “clear message” about how important fighting gun violence is to him.
He cited the ATF’s actions against what Democrats call “ghost guns” and made clear his desire to further tighten gun control.
“It’s time to do again what I did when I was a senator: ban assault weapons. I mean it,” Biden said.
His comments came three hours after his son Hunter was found guilty of three firearms-related charges.
One of the reasons Hunter was convicted was for making false statements when purchasing a firearm. On June 3, 2024, Breitbart News reported that the punishment for this crime is a fine of up to $250,000 and/or 10 years in prison.
