Biden Responds To SCOTUS Ruling On Presidential Immunity

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks to reporters at the White House in Washington, DC, on July 1, 2024, following the Supreme Court’s decision on charges brought against former President Donald Trump for attempting to interfere with the 2020 presidential election. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the president has some immunity from prosecution as long as he acts within his “constitutional authority,” but not absolute immunity. Biden disputed the ruling at a press conference on Monday, arguing the country was founded on the principle that there is no king and no one is above the law.

“This country was founded on the principle that in America there are no kings. We are all equal before the law,” Biden said. “No one, no one is above the law, not even the president of the United States.”

He added that it is up to the American people to decide what the Supreme Court has failed to decide.

“Now the American people must let the courts do their thing, but it is not up to us to pass judgment on Donald Trump’s actions,” Biden said.

After his brief speech, Biden did not answer questions from reporters about the possibility of withdrawing from the debate following his dismal performance in last week’s debate.
