President Biden said Wednesday that this week’s Alabama court ruling that frozen embryos are human beings was a “direct result” of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, and his campaign said former President Trump He laid the responsibility at his feet.
“Today in 2024, women in the United States are being kept away from emergency rooms and forced to travel hundreds of miles for medical care, while doctors are being prosecuted for providing abortions,” Biden said in a statement. I’m afraid of being hurt,” he said. “And now, an Alabama court is jeopardizing access to fertility treatment for some families who desperately want to conceive. Women’s ability to make these decisions for themselves and their families. To ignore this is outrageous and unacceptable.
“Make no mistake about it, this is a direct result of Roe v. Wade’s Ace Attorney,” Biden added.
The president has vowed to continue fighting for women’s reproductive rights and to restore Roe v. Wade protections at the federal level, although the latter is highly unlikely given the divided Congress.
Biden’s statement came a day after the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision, marking the first time a court has granted rights and protections so early in pregnancy. Although the ruling does not ban in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is limited to Alabama, the ruling has far-reaching potential and marks a new front in the fight for reproductive rights in the country. Looks like it’s ready to open.
At least two health systems in Alabama announced they would suspend IVF treatments in response to the decision.
In a separate statement, the Biden campaign directly linked the Alabama decision to President Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court during his first term in the White House.
“What’s happening now in Alabama was only possible because Donald Trump’s Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. MAGA Republicans across the country are pushing back on everything from birth control to IVF , is interfering with the most personal decisions a family can make,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.
“With the latest attacks on reproductive freedom, so-called pro-life Republicans are preventing loving couples from expanding their families. If Donald Trump is elected, he will impose extreme anti-freedom policies on the entire country. There is no doubt about that.”
Trump, who is likely to be the Republican nominee in November, has not considered the ruling. His only remaining primary Republican rival, Nikki Haley, made it clear he had no intention of agreeing with Alabama’s decision, but said he believed the fetus was an infant.
