President Joe Biden said Friday before addressing a bipartisan group of mayors at the White House that the southern border has not been secure “for the last 10 years.”
As asked by Fox News' White House correspondent Jackie Heinrich If the U.S.-Mexico border were secure, Biden said, “No, it's not.”
“I haven't believed that for the last 10 years, and I've been saying that for the past 10 years. Give me the money.”
Biden's assessment of the surge of migrants at the border comes as he seeks to pass an additional spending package currently stalled in Congress. The bill would include border measures to meet demands from Republicans in Congress, who have stalled funding, including for Ukraine, the president's priority to protect itself in the war with Russia.
The president wants the Senate to finalize the border deal next, but the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is likely to veto the bill, is dealing with growing pressure from hard-line House Republicans. This bill will be even more difficult to pass. A bipartisan package.
Biden: “I think we need significant policy changes, including changes to the asylum system to make sure we have the authority we need to control the border.'' Said in his speech on Friday. “We are ready to act.
Republican senators argued that additional spending for Ukraine could be leveraged to leverage border provisions and ultimately make some of them happen. But Johnson is already dealing with a slim majority in the House of Commons that is rumored to potentially oust him, and faces another obstacle: former President Donald Trump. President Trump said Wednesday that he expected Johnson to strike only a “perfect border” deal.
In his Friday speech, Biden questioned whether the Republican-led House of Representatives was prepared to take action and “fix” the problem, but insisted he was ready to respond.
“Right now, the problem is with the speaker and the House Republicans,” Biden said. “Are they ready to act too? They have to choose whether they want to solve the problem or continue to weaponize me to score political points against the president. Solve the problem. I'm ready for a major change. And I say that from the heart.”
