Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary in the Obama administration, Julian Castro, said on MSNBC’s “The Chris Jansing Report” on Tuesday that President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race.
“First of all, I have to say I campaigned against Joe Biden. I worked with him in the Obama administration, the Obama-Biden administration. I’ve watched him for the last three and a half years and he’s done a great job as president. It’s also true that he’s not the type of campaigner he was in 2020 and the debate is just another sign of that. This has been expected for a long time. For a while now, voters in polls and focus groups have been saying the same thing. We believe that in 2024, Democrats will have a stronger candidate than Joe Biden to beat Donald Trump. I think that’s gotten even stronger so far. The early polls after the debates show that.”
He continued, “I don’t see a path for President Biden to stay in the race long term, with members of Congress likely opposed to him. The New York Times “This is driven by editorial boards and, of course, elites and so on, but in many ways this is what has supported Joe Biden, even as rank-and-file voters, heard repeatedly in polls and focus groups, have said the party should be heading in a different direction.”
Asked if Biden should withdraw, Castro replied, “Of course.”
He added, “I think the Democratic Party has stronger options. We have people who can do a better job, including Vice President Harris, who was two points behind Donald Trump in today’s poll, while President Biden was six points behind Donald Trump.”
“I think having another Democrat would give us a better chance of beating Trump,” he concluded.
