On Monday, Van Jones, a senior CNN political commentator and former adviser to President Obama, said he wished President Joe Biden had “done a better job” of taking responsibility for his comments, but added, “He’s at least someone to talk to. I’ve yet to hear Trump talk to him.”
Scott Jennings, a senior political commentator for CNN and former senior Bush administration official, watched a video of the interview with NBC’s Lester Holt and said that while Biden did not make inflammatory remarks, former President Donald Trump, who is a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, did and should not have talked about putting Trump at the center of the bullseye. In response, Biden argued that Biden should have taken personal responsibility for his remarks rather than interpreting the words about the center of the bullseye.
“If you tried to show a split screen of every single time Donald Trump has taken responsibility or apologized for something he said, I think you’d get a blank screen,” Jones said. “I think this country is in a crisis of leadership, but if you’re offended by the main comment, the crosshair comment, [are] “100 of them are on your side. So I agree with you. I wish he’d done a better job. But Democrats are at least hearing that this guy will have a conversation. We’ve yet to hear Trump have a conversation.”
