President Joe Biden meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to oppose Israel’s plan to attack Hamas in the city of Rafah, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House on Monday. Then he spoke.
Sullivan said the president asked Netanyahu to have an “interagency” team of military, defense and humanitarian officials meet with U.S. officials in Washington to negotiate Operation Rafah by “early next week.” he added.
He said the Biden administration could authorize a limited, targeted attack on Rafah, but would reject a broader Israeli invasion of the town, saying such an invasion would threaten civilians and humanitarian He said it would put the support corridor at risk.
Rafah is Hamas’ last stronghold on the Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt. It is home to the last four Hamas battalions and is believed to be where Hamas leaders hide and hold Israeli hostages. It is also an important smuggling route.
Since February, Biden has publicly opposed any Israeli operation in Rafah, at least until a plan is in place to evacuate the 1 million Palestinian civilians evacuated there. Prime Minister Netanyahu said not to invade Rafah would be to lose the war.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr. Biden are in line with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)’s demands for Israel to hold new elections to replace Mr. Netanyahu, with Mr. Netanyahu calling him an “obstacle to peace.” The meeting took place a few days after the support. (Prime Minister Netanyahu called his own remarks “inappropriate.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s telephone conversation was brief. “We are committed to the latest developments in the war, including Israel’s efforts to achieve all of the war’s objectives of eliminating Hamas, freeing all hostages, and ensuring that the Gaza Strip no longer poses a threat to Israel. “We discussed the deployment to achieve these goals while providing the necessary humanitarian assistance,” he said in a statement published by the Government Press Office on Monday.
Sullivan said Biden specifically criticized Netanyahu’s plan to attack Hamas in Rafah. Sullivan said Biden was referring to what he called a “straw man,” the “nonsense” claim that refraining from attacking Hamas in Rafah meant giving up on defeating Hamas.
Sullivan said Biden instead emphasized that Hamas can be defeated without an invasion of Rafah. Sullivan did not elaborate on whether Biden suggested ways to persuade Hamas to surrender without a fight.
Sullivan quoted Biden as saying that Israel needs to adopt a long-term “strategy” that includes a Palestinian state. (Perhaps the prospect of such a state will force Hamas out of the tunnel and away from its weapons.)
Sullivan stressed that the fact that Hamas terrorists had returned to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City meant that, for whatever reason, Hamas terrorists had “struck back” against Israeli soldiers. He said it was not evidence that Hamas needed to be defeated militarily, but rather evidence that Hamas needed to be defeated militarily. Israel is said to be unable to maintain control of areas it has already cleared in the Gaza Strip.
Mr. Sullivan also strangely claimed that Israel interferes in American politics, although he offered no evidence for this claim.

Sullivan agreed that Netanyahu would send a delegation to meet with Biden administration officials, but suggested he had a different view of Rafah than the president. In essence, the Biden administration’s position is that Israel must negotiate for the right to defend itself and defeat the terrorists who started the war on October 7th. Unsaid: Israel remains dependent on U.S. ammunition and is awaiting passage of emergency military aid from the Democratic-run Senate.
