“I want you to know that despite media and other speculation, I remain in this race, I fight to the end, and I am firmly committed to defeating Donald Trump,” Biden wrote in the letter. CNN.
In a carefully worded letter, Biden sought to allay growing concerns about his mental competency.
“The question of how to move forward has been debated for over a week now, and it’s time to end it. We have one job: defeat Donald Trump. We have 42 days until the Democratic National Convention and 119 days until the general election. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the agenda ahead will only help Trump and hurt us,” Biden concluded. “Now is the time to come together, to move forward as a party, and to defeat Donald Trump.”
Meanwhile, a number of House Democrats told Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., on Sunday that he should step aside because of polling concerns that Biden would lose to former President Trump.
After the letter was first made public, Biden MSNBC On his “Morning Joe” show, he has used the opportunity to take on more “improvisational” and unscripted work in order to allay major concerns about his mental health.
Shortly after, Biden went on the show to criticize his election rival, Trump.
“Democrats, Joe, let me say this: The reason I travel all around the country so much is because Trump is riding in a golf cart and he’s putting money in the golf cart before he even hits a ball, and he hasn’t gone anywhere for 10 days anyway, and I’m traveling all around the country. Number one,” he said.
He continued, “And I’ve traveled around the country for a couple of reasons. Number one, to confirm that my instincts were correct that the party still wanted me to be their nominee. And all the data, all the data shows that the average Democrat who voted, the 14 million people who voted for me, still wants me to be their nominee, their first choice.”
Now, I’m not talking to you, I’m talking to the elites in the party. They know a lot more. But if there are any of you here who think I shouldn’t run, run against me. Go ahead. Announce your candidacy for president. Challenge me at the convention.”
According to the media AxiosMeanwhile, a senior House Democratic official, speaking on condition of anonymity, argued that the letter would not ease the pressure on Biden to back down.
