Biden to sign executive order on labor standards during Michigan visit

President Biden is expected to sign an executive order on Friday aimed at ensuring that federal agencies promote strong labor standards, including workplace safety, high wages and a path to unionization.

Biden is scheduled to travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to visit a union training center and meet with workers and apprentices who benefited from investments during his presidency. The White House said Biden plans to use the trip to sign a “Good Jobs” executive order calling on government agencies to prioritize different labor practices.

The order directs agencies to adopt voluntary union recognition and neutrality in union organizing, prioritize equal pay and pay transparency, support workforce development, and support workplace safety.

To ensure implementation, the order creates a task force within the White House to coordinate policy development and be co-chaired by the Secretary of Labor and the Chairman of the National Economic Council.

The White House touted Friday's executive order as Biden's latest step in prioritizing workers and labor standards. The administration cited Biden's creation of a “Made in America” office, a White House task force on labor organizing, government rules to protect workers from extreme heat on the job and federal investments in apprenticeship programs.

Biden's visit to Michigan comes amid increased travel focused on union efforts and his administration's investments in communities across the country.

The president visited Pennsylvania with Vice President Harris on Labor Day to tout his support for unions, and on Thursday he visited Wisconsin to highlight $7.3 billion in federal funding for rural electric cooperatives across the country to build or buy green power.
