Biden Commends Late-Night Hosts for Standing Against Trump
In a recent speech delivered in Boston, former President Joe Biden expressed his admiration for late-night television hosts who criticized the Trump administration, even at the potential risk to their careers.
Accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, Biden remarked that these are “dark days” for the country but insisted that it will emerge “stronger, wiser, more resilient and more just, as long as we continue to believe.”
Biden highlighted the bravery of those in late-night comedy, stating, “Late night hosts continue to shine a light on free speech, knowing their careers are at risk.” He specifically referenced Jimmy Kimmel, who faced a brief suspension due to comments made about a controversial figure.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel’s remarks, labeling them as “the most egregious act” and hinted at possible actions against the comedian. However, Kimmel’s show returned just a week later amid public support.
During his address, Biden emphasized the gravity of the current political climate, saying, “This is one of the worst things I’ve seen in over 50 years of public life. The way I see it, our very democracy is at stake. It’s not time to give up. It’s time to stand up. Stand up now!”
Biden concluded his campaign for re-election in July 2024 following significant pressure from his party after a challenging debate against Trump. He was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in May, further complicating his political landscape.
