President Joe Biden won the Democratic caucuses in Hawaii on Wednesday, moving him closer to winning the party’s nomination again after winning on Super Tuesday earlier this week.
The president defeated other leading candidates, including U.S. Representative Dean Phillips and author Marianne Williamson.
Mr. Biden came to the polls armed with his incumbency and name recognition.
She is expected to formally win the Democratic nomination later this month and will almost certainly face Donald Trump in the general election after her last major Republican rival, Nikki Haley, withdrew from the race. I will do it.
According to the Hawaii Democratic Party, Biden won with 66% of the vote in a race where only 1,563 votes were cast. 29% of voters chose “not committed.”
High school social studies teacher John Bickel voted for Bernie Sanders four years ago, but he showed up to this year’s caucuses wearing a blue Biden-Harris T-shirt.
He liked how Biden led an expansion of the child tax credit that cut the nation’s child poverty rate in half and how he stood on picket lines with striking autoworkers.
He said no other president has “personally stood by labor” like Biden.
“I was really impressed by that kind of thing about Joe Biden,” he said.
Bill Milks, an 80-year-old retiree, voted irresponsibly because he believes the 81-year-old Biden is incapable of effectively debating or campaigning for president.
“He’s not healthy enough to show enthusiasm and make people believe he can stick it out and do a good job for another four years,” Milks said.
Hawaii Democrats cast their votes in school cafeterias, community centers and union halls across the state.
Only registered voters who were party members could participate, but the party allowed same-day party registration and voter registration at each polling station.
Hawaii is a stronghold of the Democratic Party. Democrats control both chambers of the state Legislature and the governor’s office. All four members of the state’s congressional delegation are Democrats.
The Hawaii Republican Party will hold its presidential caucus on March 12th.
