Biden's Secretary of State Goes Back to Washington

Antony Blinken Joins Center for American Progress

Antony Blinken, who served as Secretary of State under President Joe Biden, has recently made headlines by returning to the political scene after his time in government. It’s been a few months since the Biden administration wrapped up, and honestly, Blinken’s activities since then have been pretty low-key. Sure, he’s taken part in a few speaking engagements and contributed to some opinion pieces, but not much else—until now.

He’s joined the board of directors at the Center for American Progress, which is notable since this think tank is quite influential within Democratic circles. It was actually dubbed “Obama’s Idea Factory in Washington” back in 2008, according to Time Magazine. During the Biden years, the Center played a pivotal role in staffing and shaping policies, with various outlets noting its involvement.

The Center advocates for a number of progressive issues, including policies promoting abortion access and various diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which are often points of contention among critics. The debates surrounding these policies really highlight how polarized things can get these days.

Interestingly, Neera Tanden, another former Biden aide, is now the president and CEO of the Center. She faced some scrutiny for her past actions, indicating the web of connections among former officials is quite intricate.

Overall, it seems like a pattern—many former members of the Biden administration are finding new gigs in Washington, some more prominent than others. For instance, Gina Raimondo, who was the Secretary of Commerce, has taken on a prominent fellowship role at the Council on Foreign Relations. Meanwhile, Rob Schreiber, who briefly stepped in as Secretary of Defense, has also transitioned to a managing position elsewhere. It makes you wonder about the paths these politicians take after their time in office.
