Steve Richetti’s Testimony on Biden’s Capacity
Steve Richetti, a key adviser to former President Joe Biden, recently participated in a voluntary interview with the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. He claimed that Biden is fully capable of carrying out his presidential responsibilities.
In a prepared statement, Richetti emphasized, “During my presidency, I always believed that President Biden could exercise his duties and responsibilities. No one else, nor did I take away President Biden’s constitutional obligations.”
His testimony was part of an inquiry into concerns regarding Biden’s mental acuity and the potential use of an autopen for signing documents.
Richetti dismissed notions of a conspiracy aimed at obscuring the president’s mental fitness, stating he was “unaware of any White House staff making decisions without his knowledge or undermining his authority.” He acknowledged that, while Biden may have made mistakes or had off days, these instances do not reflect an inability to perform his duties.
Richetti’s unexpected testimony began around 10 a.m. on Capitol Hill, although he didn’t respond to reporters as he arrived for the session.
He criticized the efforts of Republican lawmakers and the Trump administration to undermine Biden’s legacy through unsubstantiated claims about his mental health. Richetti characterized these actions as attempts to distract from the challenges faced by the current administration during its initial months.
He suggested that the House Oversight Committee’s investigation is part of a wider initiative by the administration and congressional allies to diminish Biden’s record by promoting the misleading idea that he is incapable of fulfilling his constitutional duties.
A senior aide to Biden explained that Richetti’s decision to testify was motivated by a desire to counter these misleading narratives assertively.
Notably, several former Biden administration aides who were requested to testify did not appear voluntarily, receiving subpoenas from James Komer (R-KY.), the Oversight Committee chair. These aides invoked their Fifth Amendment rights, opting not to answer questions during the proceedings, including Annie Tomasini, Associate Director of Oval Office Operations, and Kevin O’Connor, a former White House doctor.
In contrast, several others, such as former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain and Biden aides Ashley Williams and Neera Tanden, voluntarily answered questions during the session.
Mike Donilon, another senior adviser to Biden, is scheduled for a voluntary interview on Thursday, with additional former aides slated for interviews throughout September, including Bruce Reed, Anita Dunn, and other high-profile former staff members.
