Big Hospital Network Stops Gender Surgeries for Children During Nationwide Backtrack

The Chicago Tribune shared on Wednesday that pressure from the Trump administration is leading to a decline in transgender-related services for minors. Advocate Health has started informing patients that, moving forward, they will not prescribe medications related to gender transition for individuals under 19.

Advocate Health operates 69 hospitals across six states, including 11 in Illinois, and is joining a broader trend among healthcare systems that are scaling back these offerings due to federal guidance. The organization’s statement, according to the Tribune, notes the complexity of the issue and that the new policy comes after extensive discussions among their interdisciplinary team. They believe this will help healthcare facilities cater to all patients’ needs amid changing federal policies.

Interestingly, Advocate Health did not provide comments when approached by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

In January, President Trump enacted a Presidential Order that cut federal funding for chemical and surgical procedures for children, implying legal consequences for agencies that support such practices. Furthermore, in April, Attorney General Pam Bondy directed federal attorneys to investigate and potentially take action against doctors performing gender transition surgeries on minors.

Bondy’s memo expressed concerns about “politically captured profiters,” stating that so-called experts were spreading misleading information regarding the effects of “gender-affirming care,” which she argued justified harmful practices affecting children.

Since the onset of this federal crackdown, numerous significant hospitals have ceased providing transgender-related treatments for minors, inclusive of adolescent blockers and cross-sex hormones. Institutions like Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the Transyouth Health and Development Center in Los Angeles have stepped back from offering these services.

The Department of Justice has issued more than 20 subpoenas to medical professionals involved in pediatric transgender care, prompting the University of Michigan to announce on Monday that it will halt transgender hormone therapy and adolescent blockers after receiving one of these subpoenas.

A review published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in May concluded that procedures for altering a child’s sex lack a solid scientific or ethical basis and identified several risks, including potential serious harm like infertility, sexual dysfunction, and mental health issues.

Amid these developments, Illinois and 15 other Democrat-led states have launched legal actions against the federal government, arguing that healthcare providers should be compelled to regard transgender services as “medically necessary.”
