Rep. Andy Biggs Introduces Bills to Support Veterans
Representative Andy Biggs, a Republican from Arizona, has proposed three pieces of legislation aimed at improving the lives of American veterans. These bills focus on enhancing burial processes, increasing oversight of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and expanding healthcare options for veterans.
With Veterans Day around the corner, Biggs emphasized the importance of honoring those who served, stating, “It’s crucial that Congress acts, not just talks.” He believes veterans deserve tangible actions rather than mere ceremonies. “These measures provide meaningful reforms that help alleviate financial pressures, boost healthcare options, and ensure the VA is held accountable for its commitments,” he explained.
The first bill Biggs introduced is the Veterans’ Cremation Certainty Act. This legislation aims to allow veterans’ burial benefits to include predesignated direct cremation. Essentially, this would mean that payments could be made directly to burial providers when a veteran passes away, streamlining the process using existing VA systems.
Next up is the CLEAN VA Act, which stands for Claims Legitimacy and Evaluation Accountability Nationwide for VA. This bill is designed to enhance oversight and prevent corruption within the VA. Biggs noted that it seeks to ensure that veterans receive proper care and that taxpayer funds are not misused, particularly in cases of fraud. It proposes stricter penalties for fraudulent actions by VA employees and mandates a review of the disability-rating system, alongside increased ethics training for staff.
Lastly, there’s the HSA for Heroes Act, which would enable eligible veterans to establish health savings accounts. These accounts would help cover caregiving and medical expenses, thereby increasing their financial flexibility while still maintaining their VA benefits.
Biggs, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, is actively involved in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He has been representing Arizona in the House since 2017 and has his sights set on a potential run for governor in 2027.
In addition to his legislative efforts for veterans, Biggs has publicly supported President Trump’s initiatives against drug cartels. Previously, he sponsored a resolution that labeled members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua as “alien enemies” under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
“It’s essential for Congress to back the President as he addresses the needs of the American populace, particularly around border security and community safety,” Biggs remarked regarding his support for Trump’s policies.
Before joining Congress, Biggs served as president of the Arizona state Senate and was a member of the state House of Representatives. He is currently campaigning to become the Republican nominee for Arizona governor in the upcoming 2026 election, where he may face off against the sitting Democrat Governor, Katie Hobbs, who is seeking reelection.
