On Tuesday, federal agents executed a series of impressive raids aimed at dismantling a significant arm of a transnational organized crime group in California, resulting in the arrests of at least a dozen suspects in the state, with many more apprehended in other locations.
Leading the operation was the Los Angeles federal forces, who targeted the infamous Bishnoi gang, an organized crime syndicate notorious for extortion, drug trafficking, and even political assassinations in both North America and India.
By 7 a.m., investigators had already carried out at least 50 raids and detained around 20 suspects across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Authorities reported seizing over 2,200 pounds of cocaine and heroin, more than 40,000 in cash, and a considerable number of firearms during the investigation.
In the Bay Area, five individuals were arrested, while at least eight were taken into custody in Los Angeles.
Bill Esairi, the top prosecutor in Los Angeles, mentioned that the indicted individuals are suspected of engaging in some deeply violent and brutal activities, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating violent gangs, especially those from abroad without legal standing in the U.S.
The Canadian government has classified the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization, alleging they infiltrated Cricket Canada, leading to corruption and match-fixing within the organization.
Nicknamed Operation Hardball, this initiative is the outcome of several years of federal investigations into three Indian criminal organizations led by the Bishnoi tribe, with a focus on serious crimes like extortion and large-scale drug trafficking.
The gang’s leader, Lawrence Bishnoi, is a 33-year-old gangster who has been imprisoned for an extended period in India but continues to orchestrate operations from behind bars.
The Bishnoi gang is part of an eco-religious sect founded in the 15th century in Rajasthan, with a unique cultural practice of worshiping an antelope species believed to embody their spiritual leader.
According to legal documents, Bishnoi has passed authority to trusted allies and community leaders to carry out actions that include targeted killings and major drug trafficking operations.
Notably, the gang is linked to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, a well-known political figure living in Canada at the time of his murder, allegedly ordered by Bishnoi himself.
Documents indicate that Bishnoi’s operations involved significant threats and extortion attempts toward prominent community figures, creating an atmosphere of terror and intimidation.
Last November, the gang claimed responsibility for a shooting incident involving a prominent Indian actor and singer, further demonstrating their reach and threat level.
The Bishnoi gang primarily funds its extensive operations through international drug trafficking, often stealing shipments from rival gangs and moving cocaine across borders in large trucks.
Alongside the Bishnoi gang, federal authorities also took action against the Bhagwanpuria gang, a rival group started by Jag Bhagwanpuria, who has connections to the Bishnoi gang and leads a separate criminal organization in Punjab.
With an estimated 1,000 members globally, the Bhagwanpuria gang has also been implicated in various criminal activities, including extortion and drug trafficking in places like California.
Authorities are also charging a Canadian individual, Ravinder Singh Dhanda, accused of smuggling significant amounts of drugs into Canada using commercial and agricultural vehicles.
Law enforcement, including the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, played a significant role in making arrests during this extensive investigation.
