Bill Belichick responds to Robert Kraft in 'big risk' disagreement

It seems there’s still tension between Bill Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

In a rare move, Belichick addressed Kraft’s comments from last month. Kraft remarked that he took “a big risk” by trading a first-round pick to hire Belichick from the Jets back in 2000.

“As I have mentioned to Robert countless times, I took a significant risk by accepting the head coaching position with the New England Patriots,” Belichick shared with ESPN. “I had already been offered the chance to coach the Jets, but the ownership situation there was quite uncertain.”

The passing of former owner Leon Hess sparked a bidding war for the Jets between Woody Johnson and Charles Dolan at that time.

Belichick reflected on the concerns surrounding the Patriots’ head coaching position. “I was warned by various former Patriots coaches, other NFL personnel, and the media about the struggles New England faced internally. It was clear that the franchise needed a change in management to restore its former success,” he noted.

During a recent podcast appearance at Fanatics Fest, Kraft expressed that taking control of the roster was one of the best decisions he made as an owner, despite earlier criticisms about his coaching staff selections.

“I can’t say if there are any Jets fans present, but bringing Bill Belichick here was a significant risk, and though it initially received backlash in Boston, he has been with us for 24 years,” Kraft commented.

After a tough 5-11 record in his debut season, Belichick led the team to a Super Bowl title the following year, largely credited to Tom Brady stepping in as quarterback after Drew Bledsoe was injured.

Belichick, Kraft, and Brady went on to win six Super Bowls together, with Brady later winning another championship with the Buccaneers.

At 73, Belichick expressed gratitude toward Kraft during a recent interview related to his move in college football.

Interestingly, Kraft is notably absent from Belichick’s book, “The Art of Winning: My Life in Football,” released in May.

When asked about Kraft’s exclusion during an interview on “CBS Sunday Morning” this past April, Belichick stated, “[The book] focuses on my personal experiences and lessons in football.”

Following a dismal 4-13 season in 2023, Belichick’s departure from the Patriots was characterized as a mutual decision, though Kraft referred to it as a firing.

When prompted about this discrepancy in a CBS interview, Belichick insisted, “It was a mutual decision.”

The discussion also touched on Belichick’s relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, but she interrupted, stating, “We’re not addressing this.”
