Bill Belichick Riles Fans by Calling Bay State ‘Taxachusetts’

Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick called Massachusetts a “tax-ash set” on Monday, adding that the state's high taxes make it difficult to attract quality players to his team.

During the segment The Pat McAfee ShowBelichick said the state hasn't helped the Patriots, who he coached to six Super Bowl championships during his 24 seasons with the franchise, but feels it will be harder to do so going forward, especially with a greedy state that imposes a 4% millionaire's tax on income over $1 million.

“That's the tax haven,” Belichick quipped. “Even on the practice squad, even at the lowest level, almost every player's salary is pretty close to $1 million. So once you hit that $1 million threshold, you're going to pay a lot more state tax in Massachusetts.”

He continued, “You have to deal with another issue in the negotiations there. It's not like Tennessee or Florida or Nevada or some of these teams don't have state income taxes.”

“You get grilled pretty hard by your agents. They come and grill you about the taxes they're paying. We don't get any benefit from that,” Belichick continued.

Belichick is no longer the Patriots coach, but he still lives in a high-tax state and recently Bought A $4.8 million home on Nantucket Island New York Post Reported.

While taxes are indeed high in Massachusetts, the state isn't at the top of the vice list. According to financial website WalletHub, Massachusetts has 20th highest Total state taxes are 8.55 percent per year (not including the 4 percent surcharge Belichick was discussing.) The top five worst states are New York, Hawaii, Vermont, Maine and California.
