Belichick Family Celebrates Victory
The Belichick family can finally relax a bit.
In a sort of redemption story, Bill Belichick ended a long-standing family rivalry by securing a win for the Tar Heels against Duke, breaking a streak that started over 70 years ago with his father Steve’s losses to the same team while coaching at North Carolina. The final score on Saturday was 24-20, a relief for the coach and fans alike.
This victory marks another notable achievement in what has been a successful turnaround for Belichick in his second season at North Carolina. Remarkably, he has already matched his win total from last season in just six games, achieving four wins.
“It’s all about character. These guys battled all the way,” Belichick remarked after the game. “They fought hard against teams like Notre Dame and Clemson. I have no doubts about their competitiveness or toughness.”
However, the night wasn’t without its worries. What could have easily turned into a disaster instead ended with Belichick joyfully ringing the Victory Bell, a moment that could have been overshadowed by another potential disappointment.
North Carolina initially surged ahead with a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, but they went silent for a troubling 42 minutes. During this stretch, Duke capitalized, scoring 20 unanswered points, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown from just 9 yards out.
Things could have shifted dramatically had North Carolina not fumbled again in the red zone late in the third quarter. It was a strong drive led by quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., one that seemed headed for a touchdown—but it slipped away, leaving fans anxious.
As the game approached the final moments, North Carolina struggled to regain control. That is, until a pivotal 24-yard touchdown run from Jaylen McGill put the team back in the lead. An interception by the defense just seconds before the clock ran out cemented the victory for Belichick’s team.
Looking ahead, Belichick and the Tar Heels are eager to continue their momentum as they prepare to face Syracuse next week, followed by a big matchup against No. 3 Miami on Halloween.
