Bill Belichick's season at UNC continues to decline with a devastating fumble.

It seems things have taken a turn for the worse for Bill Belichick at North Carolina. The Tar Heels are still in search of their first victory against a Power 5 rival. Their opportunity slipped away in dramatic fashion on Friday night as Nathan Leacock fumbled just inches from the end zone, leading to a heartbreaking 21-18 defeat against California at Memorial Stadium.

“We came up just a bit short,” Belichick remarked. He noted that a fumble cost them what could have been a crucial touchdown. With this loss, the team’s record stands at two wins and four losses, having dropped three games in a row.

Trailing by a field goal with under four minutes left, the Tar Heels managed to push into Cal’s territory. On a critical 2nd-and-8 play, sophomore quarterback Gio Lopez connected with Leacock, who was just a dozen yards shy of scoring.

However, as Leacock approached the end zone, Golden Bears’ Brent Austin knocked the ball loose, resulting in a touchback that dashed any hopes of a comeback for UNC.

After the game, Belichick maintained that the team had been improving, though he acknowledged that turnovers “make winning really difficult.” He emphasized the need to cut down on mistakes.

While there’s some truth to Belichick’s assertion about progress, earlier losses to Power 5 teams had seen them outscored by an average of 29 points—a fact that underscores a rough patch for a program that seems to be unraveling under the guidance of the six-time Super Bowl champion.

Criticism from analysts and rival teams has only added to the gloom surrounding UNC. Following the fumble, Cal took the opportunity to tease the Tar Heels by displaying a mocking graphic highlighting a message of support for Belichick from earlier in the month, amid speculation about his future with the team.

Off the field, the situation has been complicated by Belichick’s personal life, particularly his relationship with Jordon Hudson, who is 49 years his junior.

During the game, a chant echoed from the California student section, perhaps in reference to his situation: “A high school girl!”

Adding to the drama, a heated exchange between Hudson and Belichick about their previous work on a canceled show surfaced on video early Friday.

As the Tar Heels continue to struggle, they face a formidable challenge ahead, set to host No. 18 Virginia on October 25 at Kenan Stadium.
