Bill Burr’s Shifting Political Commentary
Comedian Bill Burr has a long-standing reputation for mocking both the left and the right, but lately, he seems to be gravitating more towards left-leaning views in his commentary.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Burr expressed his concerns about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), suggesting that white people aren’t nearly as upset as they should be since they don’t see themselves in situations that make them vulnerable.
Burr, who is pro-abortion and has previously criticized Florida’s mask mandates, also controversially implied that the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, committed by Luigi Mangione, had some blame placed on Thompson. He then took a jab at how corporate executives reacted to the incident.
Burr stated, “The response to the Luigi thing was not to be like, ‘Well, hey, maybe we need to look at what we’re doing if what we’re doing makes some crazy person do this.’ [Executives’] response was to take their faces off the internet and get security.”
He further questioned the need for heightened security: “It’s like, you don’t think you need to examine? You know what I mean? It’s like, you’re not the president. You’re just the CEO of a business. Why do you need this level of security? Like, what is it that you’re doing?”
There’s a growing concern among health care executives and others about their security, especially considering a poll indicating a significant percentage of liberals supporting violent action against them.
According to a CloudResearch poll following Thompson’s assassination in December 2024, 25% of self-identified liberals were either “supportive or very supportive” of the killing, and 68% expressed at least some sympathy for Mangione.
Another Emerson poll revealed that 12.4% of Democrats thought the actions of the person who killed the United Healthcare CEO were “completely acceptable,” while 7.5% considered them “somewhat acceptable.”
This isn’t the first time Burr has shown sympathy for Mangione over Thompson, who was a father of two. Just days after the murder, Burr voiced on his podcast that “f**king CEOs are f**king afraid right now,” adding that they “should be.”
In early 2025, on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Burr also called for Mangione’s release, saying, “Free Luigi!” The context of that remark—whether it was genuine or a joke—remains unclear.
And it’s worth noting that Burr’s wife, who holds liberal views, also made headlines for a gesture aimed at former President Donald Trump during UFC 295 in 2023.
