Bill de Blasio supports democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City

De Blasio Endorses Mamdani for Mayor

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio endorsed Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, for mayor on Tuesday morning.

In expressing his support, de Blasio emphasized Mamdani’s dedication to making life more affordable for working-class New Yorkers. “We don’t just need Zohran Mamdani as mayor because he has the right ideas or potential. It’s deeper than that; he embodies a city that prioritizes those who contribute to its growth,” he stated.

De Blasio pointed out that Mamdani’s significant victory illustrates that New Yorkers align with his progressive vision, which includes initiatives like freezing rents, providing free childcare, and creating community-run grocery stores.

Mamdani’s Win Reflects Democratic Divide

When Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa weighed in, he told Fox News Digital, “De Blasio ruined NYC and cut back law enforcement. His backing of Mamdani is a red flag. Mamdani represents de Blasio 2.0, but with greater risks.”

Criticism and Support for Mamdani’s Aspirations

Despite Mamdani’s recent popularity among New Yorkers, de Blasio acknowledged that many doubt his ability to fulfill the ambitious promises of his campaign. “I know firsthand that skepticism exists,” de Blasio remarked.

He reflected on the criticisms he faced during his own tenure from 2014 to 2021, saying, “People labeled my vision as unrealistic, warning that affordable housing and paid sick days could lead to unintended consequences.” This pushback has, as he noted, haunted many progressive initiatives.

De Blasio defended Mamdani’s agenda, which includes a rent freeze—a proposal De Blasio’s own administration found challenging at times. “My administration managed to freeze rents three times, aiding countless people affected by the Great Recession. It’s not about what can be done; it’s about the political will behind it,” he added.

In discussing Mamdani’s vision for New York City, de Blasio encouraged voters to “bring Mamdani into office.” He had previously held back from endorsing any candidates until now.

Despite de Blasio’s endorsement, several prominent New York Democrats, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer, have yet to back Mamdani, even after he secured the Democratic nomination earlier this summer.

Fox News Digital reached out for comments from current leaders, including mayors Eric Adams and Cuomo, but did not receive an immediate response.
