Bill Maher Discusses Western Civilization on “Real Time”

In a recent episode of “Real Time,” host Bill Maher made some pointed remarks about younger generations and their understanding of Western civilization. He humorously suggested that many kids today might think of Western civilization as simply being synonymous with oppression, referencing pop stars like Billie Eilish and Chapel Roan.

Maher kicked off the conversation by quoting Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated at the Munich Security Conference that we are part of one civilization: Western civilization. This served as a backdrop for Maher’s broader discussion about how today’s youth view this cultural idea.

Expressing his views, Maher articulated, “I want to say about Western civilization, children, I don’t know what it is.” He further elaborated that many young people perceive the West as inherently negative, equating concepts like “Western” to “evil.” His argument emphasized that harmful actions are not limited to any one group; he pointed to historical examples involving various cultures.

Maher went on to argue that there seems to be widespread disdain for America and the West, which he found ironic because, in his opinion, Western civilization has contributed significantly to what enriches modern life. “Don’t ask Billie Eilish or Chapel Lawn what Western values are. They’ll just say it’s about oppression, but it’s not,” he insisted. Instead, he highlighted principles like the rule of law, respect for minorities, democracy, and scientific progress as key benefits of Western heritage.

He expressed a wish that educational institutions would focus more on these positive contributions to Western civilization and teach them in schools once again.

This isn’t Maher’s first critique of Billie Eilish. Earlier, he had taken issue with her for what he saw as “virtue signaling” during her remarks about immigration at the Grammy Awards. Eilish, who won song of the year, drew attention with her statement that “no one stays illegally on stolen land,” which spurred Maher to break down her speech, questioning her understanding of the issues she addressed. He suggested that perhaps she should refrain from commenting if she’s not well-versed in the subject matter.

Yet, Maher did acknowledge agreeing with Eilish on some broader points she raised about social engagement, emphasizing that people should indeed keep fighting for what they believe in. He recognized the importance of voices and opinions in making a difference.
