Bill Maher’s Take on the White House Ballroom Conversion

During an episode of “Real Time” on Friday, Bill Maher expressed his indifference regarding President Donald Trump’s initiative to transform the East Wing of the White House into a ballroom. He also criticized how the media has been covering this development.

Maher bluntly stated, “Ballroom, I don’t care…,” as he reflected on the media’s polarized coverage. He pointed out that responses to the project varied dramatically, noting, “When we first mentioned it, it was all, ‘Oh my god, he’s desecrating the White House.'” But he added that such renovations have happened before, concluding that he views the White House simply as “just a building.”

He expressed dissatisfaction with the current arrangement for state dinners, which are being held in tents, calling out, “This is America!” Maher suggested that converting some of the space could actually be a good idea.

Interestingly, Maher highlighted that the ballroom’s funding comes from private sources, meaning taxpayers wouldn’t bear the costs. This isn’t his first commentary on Trump’s ballroom plan—previously, he raised concerns about its implications, saying it symbolizes Trump’s intent to remain in the White House indefinitely.

In an engaging debate with former Republican National Chairman Michael Steele, Maher mentioned that while he opposed the demolition, he views the White House as merely a structure. Steele lamented the demolition of a key symbol of government, to which Maher replied, “Oh, it’s a building, Mike.” They shared differing views on the significance of the renovations, especially how they relate to American democracy.

Despite ongoing debates, the ballroom, costing about $200 million, is seen by some officials as a necessary upgrade in the context of renovations that have been taking place over the mansion’s long history.
