Bill Maher Reflects on Democrats’ Search for Their Own Joe Rogan
On his show “Real Time,” Bill Maher chuckled at the Democrats’ efforts to discover their version of Joe Rogan, noting the irony that those podcasters typically disengage only after becoming disillusioned with the party.
Maher pointed out, “There’s a lot of buzz around finding a liberal counterpart to Joe Rogan.” He suggested that rather than trying to create a new figure, they should reflect on how they lost him in the first place.
Previously, Rogan had aligned with Democratic figures like Bernie Sanders in the 2020 election, but by 2024, he was openly supporting Donald Trump.
The host proposed that a significant factor in Kamala Harris’s 2024 election loss was “Republicans having their own podcast.” He quipped, “Maybe that’s part of it. But consider this: instead of focusing on a new Joe Rogan, think about why you lost the previous one—he was once one of your allies.”
In relation to the Democrats’ desire to find their own version of Rogan, Maher stated, “They had me. I was on their team.”
Maher drew parallels between Rogan’s shift and Elon Musk’s political transformation, suggesting that Musk, once a liberal, also felt compelled to change camps due to negative attitudes within the left.
He observed that both Rogan and Musk experienced gradual shifts in their political affiliations, not sudden changes.
Referencing a 2022 Twitter post from Musk, Maher presented a chart showing that Democrats had moved too far left for Musk, while he perceived his own views as stable.
Rogan mentioned that due to the Democratic Party’s drastic leftward shift, he’s now viewed as conservative—a label he didn’t initially associate with himself. He remarked on feeling excluded from his previous political home.
Maher emphasized that attempts by the left to “cancel” Rogan and Musk contributed to their departure from the party.
He recalled, “They went all out to cancel Rogan a few years back. And when Elon hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 2021, some cast members snubbed him after he became a Trump supporter. You think people forget stuff like that?”
The late-night host contended that while he himself never left the party, Democrats need to make an effort to reclaim figures like Rogan and Musk, asserting that it’s still possible.
