Comedians Bill Maher and Larry Wilmore slammed President Joe Biden’s commencement speech at Morehouse College in Atlanta, calling it “condescending” toward black people.
Speaking at Morehouse College’s commencement in May, Biden said the United States was a racist country where black people were not welcome and that “old ghosts in new clothes” were trying to gain power and threatening black “freedom.”
The president also repeatedly mentioned George Floyd and told the young graduates that “democracy” doesn’t work for them.
Biden’s fear-mongering comes at a time when Democratic Party leaders are panicking as an increasing number of black voters defect from him to former President Donald Trump.
Larry Wilmore spoke about Biden’s speech on a recent episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.
“What did you think of Biden’s speech? [Morehouse]”?” Maher asked.
“That’s condescending,” Wilmore said, noting that Al Gore alienated him with similar “condescending” comments during the 2000 election.

“I live in a world of aspiration, not despair, because I know those things exist,” Wilmore said. “I talk about them, I joke about them. If I want to build something, I don’t want to just put a Band-Aid on things in my life, I also want to build something in my life, and I build things by inspiration.”
Maher also slammed Biden’s speech, saying it was like “night and day” compared to Barack Obama’s.
“Obama’s speech was much better when it worked – so many doors have been knocked down, so many reasons to be hopeful, there are no more excuses, etc. Obviously Obama’s standards as a black man speaking at a college level are obviously different, but I thought Biden’s speech was very late 2000s,” Maher said.
